Well this extra storage though not much is something I will gladly take. It frees up for me at least half my storage. They should do the same thing for dye IMO.

The way I see it, this storage change is better then nothing. Anything that frees up additional space for stuff is great.
I'll be able to move all my rare and common materials out of the way, making room for more important things.
I do hope A.net implements a small Event tab for all the masks we're all been collecting lol

For some people like me this is greta as i'm sure i'm not the only one who has a storage full of materials. My storage could be freed up now and my mule could actually not be a mule and be a real charcter which i'm itching to play

I could turn the wood into parch, yes, but I don't have the money anymore. So for me this storage is barely useful. Can't make a mule since that last slot of mine is for PvP.
Still, though, its better that nothing!

Make your PvP character into a mule. I used to do that until I got rid of a bunch of useless stuff.

Dunno about the general community, but:
I keep my armor sets on the characters who wear them. My storage is almost entirely full of crafting materials and 15 of those slots will be freed up when this change goes through. I like the change.
I agree that it should be for all players, or that each chapter should have its own storage improvements. Just giving it to those with Factions seems wrong to me.
Also, as for storage space: When it comes to server expenses for games like this, storage is probably the cheapest part of the equation. While material storage may take up less memory than true slots that can hold anything, adding more of those slots are very unlikely to cause unbearable server load.

Since the max quantity in any slot if 250, it seems to be the case that they are using one byte to store the quantity. The most they could increase that is to 255 (since they have to allow for 0), without increasing the number of bytes to store it. This is why a "250 stack could be much different than a 999 stack". It likely has nothing to do with the number of digits in the number. You have to think in "binary" as computers do.
|
Just to be clear on this, each additional bit doubles the number of permutations. 8 bits has 256 (0-255) combinations. 9 bits has 512, 10 bits has 1024, and so on.
So going to stack sizes of 1000 would add two bits to the data.

Not really, as it seems you have skiped over much of the content in this thread. There are reasons why its materials and not all purpose storage.
and no, its a good question, cause you have not made it obvious or not if you had read anything else. If you made it apperent, then no question would have been needed.

We should at least be glad, because they easily could have not given us anything at all. I'm sure you have some materials in your storage, so you can at least save a slot for a weapon or something..

the real question is when are they giving us more space! i mean all the other rpg's i played have HUGE storage for your account...this is awsome yes bout friggin TIME...but WoW has a large storage,i mean Diablo2 had more storage >.<
and u could mule more!!..for us non rich folk, my storage is bulked up by materials, dyes and the golds that are good i find...but since storage is so small half my active characters have to be carrying another mans junk....i demand the space!

I know what Takonic's saying about storage in other RPGs. In Anarchy Online, for example, you have a "Bank" that has more than double the storage we have. In addition, your AO character can buy backpacks(multiple backpacks if desired), and the cheapest ones have about 36 slots.

Now, if you really think about the extra bytes required to make the enhancement that ANet made vs. the storage that people want that can hold anything is quite significant. As stated above, they are able to transmit all data regarding the extra 34 slots with just 34 bytes. They don't need to trasmit what the spot holds because it can only hold one thing. They only have to transmit the quantity, which only takes one byte per slot. How many bytes would be required to transmit each slot if it could hold anything ? Think of all the combinations of different kinds of armor, body spots, dyes applied in varying combinations, weapons including all the different combinations of mods in differing percentages, whether they are customized or not and for whom they are customized, etc. There is a ton of information that would have to be transfered to identify exactly what it is in each slot. Multiply this by all the players, current and future, and hopefully you get an idea of the increased traffic and storage that such storage increases would cause. I don't know about you, but I don't want ANet making stupid system design decisions to appease some, while in the long-term, destroying the playability of the game.

Um, what? If thats how theyre doing it, it makes me sad. Im not a programmer, but I THINK you dont have to have the inventory scan every possible item in the game to figure out whats in a particular slot. If I could, Id have it so that when an item is stored, the server "tags" it as whatever it is. The games program does know what an items stats are, unless someone was silly enough to make GW scan your weapon hand every time you change weapons, THEN, to scan...weapon = sword...damage range = 12-17...handle = Normal... ect. Thats just ridiculous, but its what Swinging Fists seems to be saying they do with inventory. I would rather have had them increase stack size to 500, as right now, I could free up about 3-5 slots on each of my 4 characters(roughly equal to the 20 given ONLY to Factions players. Typical of OLRPGs though(Want the goodies we made almost a necessity? Buy this!) I usually tolerate it though, if I really like the game.

I like the new storage addition... but that's because I store all my materials in the vault already and they take up 3/4 of the space.
So for me I'm getting another 3/4 of a vault of room... but that's on paper...
I generally have more than one stack of things like tanned hide squares and cloth (I assume most people do). The fact we are limited to one slot for each material (and that's assuming we collect every material...) is very much disheartening.
While I understand the OP's frustration, I must point out that it is reasonable for the mod to be limited so much. Look at it from the POV of someone who can't get Factions, but has Prophecies. They're not missing out on much, but we're getting more benefit for having bought the second chapter... which is how it should be.
